Spring is here and that often brings the urge to de-clutter and deep clean. From organizing closets and desks to scrubbing the areas of your home that may have been missed for weeks on end, making sure you stay on top of home maintenance should be a priority. Here, we will offer some tips on what maintenance items are the most important.
#1: Don’t forget the exterior.
Continued sunshine and warmth is on the horizon for spring and summer, so it’s a great time to get outside and get the exterior of your home ready. The first to-do: get your gutters and downspouts cleaned and if there are repairs that need to be made, act right away. If you have clogged gutters or downspouts, this could cause water to build up around the eaves of your roof, which could cause rot over time. This could be an expensive fix that could be avoided! While you’re cleaning outside, be sure to inspect the roof for any missing shingles or repairs.
#2: Dust hidden areas.
Dust accumulates quickly around your home and it can contribute to poor indoor air quality. It can also cause increased asthma or allergy symptoms, which area already at a high for many people during spring. Make sure to dust or vacuum chair and stairway rails, window casings, tops of bookshelves, cabinets, and ceiling fans. If you have drapes or curtains through your home, take some time to vacuum them, wash and/or dry-clean the fabric, as dust can build up there, too. If you have vinyl or wood blinds, use a damp cloth to clean them. Getting rid of dust build up will contribute to a healthier, cleaner home!
#3: Purge the garage or other storage spaces.
The garage can often turn into the catch all storage area. Set aside some time to go through boxes that may be stored in your garage and get rid of things that you haven’t used recently. Throw away unusable items and recycle as much as possible. While you are purging, create a pile for selling or donating. To help with organization, purchase storage shelves and containers to help keep things consolidated and save space. Then, clean the garage space by dusting and touching up areas of paint or drywall that need updating.
