With school out for the summer, nannies and parents alike are looking for ways to keep their kids engaged, entertained, and educated. These next couple of months are wonderful for resting and connecting with the kids and young adults in your life, and there are lots of ways to do that. Here are some ideas on ways to engage your kids this summer so you can hear more of ‘This is fun!’ rather than ‘I’m bored’ all summer long.
Grow something
Teach kids what it means to tend to something and watch it grow. Perhaps it is just a small potted herb garden that you plant together, or it’s something bigger like a planter box of vegetables. This is a great way to get kids outside in nature, give them something to take care of, and then see what happens when things grow.
Get creative
Set out on a search around the neighborhood or local parks for rocks that the kids can paint or decorate. Buy some plain shirts and a tie-dye kit to create colorful summer tops. Create a fun scavenger hunt that takes the kids around to places that they don’t normally frequent. Work on a kindness project together. Write and illustrate a children’s storybook together that tells of your summer adventures together. Ask the children for creative ideas and see what they come up with. This not only gives them ownership of the activity, but they might even be more excited about participating!
Stay active
Staying physically active is important during the summer months – especially when screen time continues to tempt them. Build an obstacle course outside in the yard, set up a pile of cushions and blankets in the living room for a fort, find local bike trails to explore, or set up a “walk or run” challenge that gives them a mile-goal to reach by the end of the summer.
Every year, summertime is a chance to create memories with the kids in your life. Thinking about new ways to engage is a meaningful and fun way to forge deeper bonds and connections.
