Ways to Connect with Your Newborn

As a parent of a new baby, you know the plethora of emotions that come with welcoming a little one into your home. There’s excitement, joy, sleep deprivation, and even frustration at times. And, in the middle of all that, there is a love like no other. That love calls you to love and connect with your new child, so they can bond with you. Not sure where to begin? Here are some tips on how to connect with your baby.

Talk and sing to them

Our voices are one of the best ways you can connect with your baby. Obviously, they don’t know what you’re saying at first, but the sound of your voice becomes a comfort. It’s something that they will come to find as familiar and soothing. So, don’t be afraid to talk to your baby while you’re holding them or carrying them around the house or outside. Sing or hum to them as you go around to different rooms or environments. Hearing language helps encourage them to find their voice, too.

Physical contact

Most babies are ready to bond with an adult right away. That’s why you often hear that ‘skin-to-skin’ contact is very important for parents and newborns immediately. This helps create a unique and intense form of attachment that is important as your baby develops.

Eye contact

Look at your baby and talk to them. We use our eyes to communicate as adults and your baby needs to learn that this is a form of communication, as well. Once they get older, they will rely on you to imitate facial expressions or gestures.

And while breastfeeding is one of the most common ways for a parent to bond with their child, it is still possible to deeply bond while bottle feeding. You can also connect with the new little human in your life through regular reading, play time, or bath time. And last, take them wherever you go. Wear them in a baby carrier or baby sling while you do routine activities. These are simple and easy ways to build a strong connection and help build trust between you and your child.

Being the parent of a newborn is a lot of work! It requires a lot of attention, energy, and patience, but the feeling of connection and love that comes from it is unlike anything else you’ll experience. It will often give you the boost that you need to keep going on your most tiring days. Be committed to connecting and bonding too, as it often doesn’t happen overnight. It is a personal experience that takes time.
