Tips to Secure a Role in a High-Net-Worth Home

Whether you’re a private chef, estate manager, chauffeur or a skilled nanny, high-net-worth homes are looking for qualified and experienced domestic staff to keep their homes running smoothly.

Tips to Secure Your Dream Role

Highlight your previous experience.

When it comes to high-net-worth employers, you’ll generally find that they are looking for experienced employees, not those who are just starting out in the domestic staffing industry. Ideal candidates will likely have 5 to 10 years of experience working as a domestic staffing professional in a private residence.

On your resume, be sure to highlight all of your previous in-home experience, along with specific job duties and responsibilities you had.

Pay superb attention to detail.

Employee candidates will need to have a strong attention to detail and be able to maintain a high level of organization throughout the home.

Practice outstanding communication skills

Maintaining good communication is critical to any solid and respectful working relationship. Be sure to showcase strong communication skills and demonstrate how you are able to work effectively with other staff members and residents in the home or property.

Provide a commitment to privacy.

Working with high-net-worth individuals or families means having discretion and keeping their privacy secure. Sometimes these individuals are high-profile celebrities or businesspeople and require employees to sign non-disclosure agreements prior to employment.

Maintaining privacy and confidentiality is critical to their safety many times, and it’s important that all employees understand and adhere to privacy rules.

Know your physical ability.

Depending on the job, the ideal candidate may need to have certain physical abilities to perform the necessary duties. For example, working as a housekeeper, estate manager, or gardener/groundskeeper, there may be significant lifting required, or the ability to move heavy objects and stand for extended periods of time.

Before applying, be aware of these types of job-specific requirements to ensure you can meet those.

Focus on professionalism.

As with any household staffing position, candidates should always focus on being professional, discrete, and respectful of the home, as well as their privacy and security of the household and its occupants.

Highlight you education.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required for these roles, but when it comes to working in high-net-worth households, additional education or training in hospitality can be beneficial. Other jobs may require other certifications or training, too.

For example, some homes may wish to hire nannies with early childhood education degrees or specific newborn training. For estate managers, a degree in business, business leadership, or finance could be desirable.

Dress for success.

When you do secure an interview, put your best professional foot forward. That means dressing professionally, doing your research on the job, having an updated resume and reference list to share, and being a good listener.

Also remember that you should be looking for a good fit, too. That means asking questions that come up and learning as much as you can about the specific role. If you don’t get a clear answer or you don’t believe your skillset aligns with what they’re looking for, it’s okay to move on and keep looking for the right match.
