Asking for a Wage Increase in 2023

If you have an end-of-year or first-of-the-year review coming up with your household employer, and you’re thinking about asking for a raise, you might feel some mixed emotions about it. Even if you know you’ve done a good job and are committed to working at your employer’s home, it can be nerve-wracking asking for more money. Here are a few things to keep in mind before you propose a raise.

Have some talking points prepared ahead of time

Take some time to reflect on your professional accomplishments this year. Write down some specific examples of how you’ve gone the extra mile and provide some concrete data that demonstrates why you deserve an increase in wages. Be able to provide some goals or strategies on how you can make things even smoother in your role and ask for feedback on those ideas.

Show confidence

Be confident in your request, but balance that with respect. If you come across as demanding or entitled, you may lose the opportunity for a wage increase. Be courteous throughout the conversation and be willing to listen with humility. After you make your request, it might take a little bit of time for your employer to crunch the numbers. So, be patient and continue to give your best in the interim.

Be flexible

The end of the year is a very hectic time for most people. So, pay attention to their schedule, be willing to work around that, and if there is a lot of stress or enhanced anxiety in the home, be willing to wait and reschedule your meeting. You want to be sure that both of you can focus on the conversation and consider the details without being distracted or anxious about more pressing matters.

Keep professionalism at the forefront

After making your request, keep in mind that you don’t need to provide details about why you need more money. Focus instead on what makes you an asset to their home and highlight your strengths in the position. Your professionalism speaks volumes.

At Household Staffing, we specialize in placing qualified employees in homes for household work around the country.
