If 2023 is the year that you plan on finding a new job, you probably have a lot of thoughts swirling around in your head. You might be wondering what type of job will be ideal, where you’ll want to be, and what will match your skillset the best. In addition to this, you’ll need to determine what salary you’re comfortable with and be able to discuss it with prospective employers during an interview. Not sure how to set realistic salary expectations? Here are some tips.
Do your research
Research what the average salary is for the profession. For example, what do other nannies get paid in the New York City area? Or what is the base salary for private chefs in Philadelphia? Doing some research online for stats like this will help you understand what is within the normal range for the role you’re considering.
Know your worth
Your experience, your specific training, and your expertise in a specific area are valuable when you begin your job search. You are a unique person that brings a unique skillset and personality to a position and this counts for something. So, factor in your years of experience in the specific career field, any certifications, courses, or degrees that you have, and know that if you have what goes ‘above and beyond’, you can expect a higher salary. During an interview, be able to talk about your added value and what you bring to the table.
Be willing to negotiate
This can be uncomfortable at times but negotiating for the salary that you want – and deserve – is an important skill to learn. Be flexible but show your determination. Review offers and provide suggestions. If you do agree to a lower starting salary, work with the new employer to come up with a date on a review and salary increase (for example, a three or six month review). This gives you some time to prove that you’re a good fit and that you are dedicated to the role.
