How to Become A Nanny

If you like working with kids and enjoy being in a home environment with them, working as a private nanny could be a great option. Working as a nanny allows you to put your talent with kids to great use. Here are some tips on how to become a nanny and land a job that fits with your unique experience and interests.

Tip #1: Evaluate your skillset.

Becoming a nanny might appear easy, but it definitely requires specific skills. Taking care of another person’s kids requires a special kind of patience and love and if you don’t have that, it will become obvious to the family you’re working for – and especially the kids! Other important skills include good communication, trustworthiness, flexibility, and good organizational skills.

Tip #2: Hands on experience.

Having previous experience working one on one with kids is valuable because it will give you the knowledge that you need to handle different things that come your way from day to day. If you’re considering becoming a nanny, get as much experience you can caring for children so you can build your resume. Consider working in a preschool or at a daycare for a while and babysit as much as you can. This will not only give you experience that a family will look for when hiring a nanny, but it will also give you a great trial run on what it will be like to become a nanny.

Tip #3: Get certified and trained.

When it comes to hiring someone to work with their kids, parents are going to be looking for the most qualified nanny possible. This means you should consider getting some certification and training to help you stand apart from other people. Start with basic CPR and first aid certification, then work your way over to International Nanny Association basic skills assessment and nanny credential exams. Also consider being a member with the Association of Premier Nanny.
