Résumé Versus Recruiter: Which One Should You Rely on More?

If you’re thinking about hiring an experienced domestic staffing professional for your home this summer or later in the year, there is a lot to consider.

You’ll need to identify what your household needs are, what duties that person will need to perform, what salary and benefit options you’ll offer, and how much experience you want the person to have. Hiring household staff is also a personal decision and requires the right personality match.

A résumé is one of the best introductions into potential candidates, but keep in mind that it’s just a tool that provides a glimpse into who the person is.

It can show experience, training, qualifications, and other important details about the person’s work history, but it doesn’t always show you what you need to know: are they compatible with your home?

Should You Rely Solely on a Résumé?

Resumes are limited in space and often can’t include all of a candidate’s skills or expertise. They also can’t capture the personality of the person.

For example, if you’re looking for a nanny, the résumé can’t convey their passion for children or show you how they interact with kids of varying ages. If you’re looking for an estate manager, a résumé won’t showcase the way an individual can juggle many different tasks at once or handle a high stress situation.

In addition, a résumé can’t always show a prospective candidate’s potential. For example, a domestic staffing expert may have the kind of experience you’re looking for in several areas, but not in a few others – but that doesn’t mean they don’t have the potential to learn those things or grow into the role. They may be able to develop those skills if they are given the opportunity.

How a Recruiter Fills the Gap

Working with a household staffing recruiter can give you a more well-rounded view of the candidates. They take the time to get to know prospective candidates through in-depth conversations and interviews.

You can trust us because we want the best for your family and we want to help make your life easier.

Mary

I’m honest, transparent, and intentional—recommending only candidates who truly match what you’re looking for. I’m not here to just send your resumes. I build real relationships with candidates, and because they trust me, I get a true sense of their experience and what they’re looking for in their next role. I’m extremely passionate and knowledgeable about what I do and I’m fully dedicated to finding the right person for your family.

They also check their references and ask a broad spectrum of questions that gives them a good idea of what it’s like to have them working in a home.

Through these efforts, recruiters can truly get a sense of where they can thrive. This allows for a great match the first time, ultimately leading to long-term employment with a candidate you trust.

With over a decade in private staffing, I understand the care and discretion needed when bringing someone into your home. I’ve been on all sides—working in private homes, hiring for my own family, and placing trusted staff for wonderful clients. I take this responsibility seriously and value open, honest communication. I’ll always be transparent with you about any concerns that arise. My goal is to place your long-term hire—and if you call me after the placement, I want it to be just to say, “Thank you, they’re amazing!”

Niihalani

Through the collaborative experiences in my life, I have learned what is most important to both parents and homeowners – and candidates. I am able to vet candidates on a more personal level to truly understand what makes them “jive,” which allows me to ensure they are the best fit for your position. We do not take this role lightly, this is not just another placement fee. The care that is put into our search can be seen clearly in our Google reviews. However, trust is earned. If for any reason you start to feel uncomfortable, please reach out to me. Open communication is the most important part of this search.

At Household Staffing, our personalized approach allows us to get to know the people behind the résumé. We work to find the right combination of personality and experience to place employees in homes across the country.

I would say that our reviews speak for themselves. We have been doing this for years and treat every job as if we were employing someone in our home with our children. We listen to your needs and only send you individuals who we feel would fit well in your home. When we first work with a client, we do an intense intake to find out a little more about your personality, things that make you tick, etc. Then we use that information when speaking with candidates to determine if you would be a good match.

Morgan

Before becoming a recruiter, I was a nanny myself for nearly 10 years, so I truly understand how personal and important it is to bring someone into your home. I approach every placement with that same level of care as if I were hiring for my own home. I take the time to vet each candidate thoroughly, not just based on their skills and experience, but for the qualities and things that matter most to you in the kind of person you’re looking to bring into your home. My goal is always to create long-term matches that feel like the right fit for both the family and the candidate.

Having people work in your home – your sacred space – is something that should be taken seriously, and that’s why the domestic staffing industry requires building meaningful personal connections.

Michelle

We invest time in understanding the specific qualities you’re seeking in a candidate, ensuring they not only meet your non-negotiables but also possess the temperament and personality that will be a great fit for your family and home.

Leah

I have been working in the private household industry for over 10 years. I understand what my clients need and how important it is to trust who is in your home. I take extreme care throughout the intake, interview, and placement process. As a mom myself, I have hired household staff and I know the delicacies of finding the perfect candidate.

We enjoy getting to know our candidates and our clients. This allows us to recommend the right person – not just someone who looks good on paper.

Once we find candidates that align with your in-home role and your household’s unique needs, we will introduce you to them. We assess each candidate’s strengths, learn about what they’re passionate about, and take the time to listen to prior employer’s experiences with their work. This allows us to place them in homes where we know they will excel.

Ella

I approach this job as if I were inviting someone into my own home. I rarely need to make replacements because I take the time to get it right from the start. Our long-standing success is a testament to this commitment. I take my role as a recruiter personally, understanding how difficult it can be to trust a stranger in your home. That’s why we ensure the person we place is the perfect fit for every member of your family.

Ashley

You can trust me with your family because I’ve been in this business for nearly a decade and treat my clients like my own. I will always be transparent with you to help find the right fit for your home. If I spot any red flags, even with a candidate you like, I’ll let you know right away. I treat my clients the way I’d want to be treated, and as a family person myself, I understand how significant this decision is. It’s an intimate choice to have someone in your home, caring for your children. If I wouldn’t hire a candidate for my own family, I certainly wouldn’t place them in yours. My long track record reflects the trust clients have in me, with many coming back for multiple placements because they know I am professional and dependable.
